“Do you think she can hear us?” Matt whispers softly.

“I don’t know. She might be able to.” Zach answers him.

I felt like I was in the room with them but I also felt as if I was stuck in a dark room all my own.

Honestly, nothing felt real.

I could feel Zach’s hand brushing over my hair but it felt different, muted almost.

“I wish she would just wake up at least once to let us know that she’s going to be alright. It’s killing me to see her so helpless like this.” Matt sighs.

“It’s killing me too. I’ve only seen her helpless once and that nearly killed me. I gave up everything for her then.” Zach agrees.

Matt and Zach go silent for a little bit before Zach speaks again.

“If anything happens to me I need to know that you’ll take my place. I don’t want her to be alone again.” Zach states.

“She’ll never be alone, Zach. Neither Knox or myself will see that happen.” Matt promises.

“That’s not what I meant. I know you’ll both be there for her but she’s going to need someone to love her.” Zach replies.

“Zach…” Matt trails off.

“She still loves you, Matt, and if I wasn’t in this picture she would be with you right now.” Zach states truthfully.

He was right if he wouldn’t have come into my life I would have stuck with Matt. We had a long history together after all.

“Nothing is going to happen to you, Zach.” Matt replies confidently.

“I’m not so sure anymore. This town has it out for me. They want me dead in the worst way. I’m a threat to them and they know it.” Zach argues.

“How can they possibly think one man can be a danger to an entire town?” Matt questions.

“I’m a leader, Matt. People will follow me if I stand up.” Zach answers simply. “I never wanted that role and that’s why I have avoided it like the plague.”

“You and me both, the last town I was in wanted me to become their leader but I wanted nothing to do with it. I was better at just doing my own thing.” Matt chuckles lightly.

“That’s why the Captain must have kept us close then. He always kept me happy and gave me everything I wanted.” Zach laughs shortly.

“He kept me happy as well. It wasn’t hard to get him to cave and give me Abby when I requested to buy her. He never would have done that for anyone else.” Matt replies.

“I bet he’s got soldiers out looking for me.” Zach then sighs. “I’ve never been gone this long.”

“Would that be a good thing or a bad thing?” Matt inquires.

“It depends on who he sent out.” Zach answers.

“What about Gale?” Matt then questions.

“Gale is smart and resourceful on his own. I have a feeling he will use our relationship with the military camp to work in his benefit.” Zach replies.

“I hope whatever he does come up with works.” Matt sighs.

I hoped he came soon, because I didn’t think I could last another day in this place where Zach had to fight just to keep us alive.
